What Is an Alkaline Water Filter?
An alkaline water filter is a reverse osmosis system with an additional remineralisation stage added after the RO membrane. Standard reverse osmosis removes up to 99% of dissolved contaminants from your tap water, but the process also strips naturally occurring beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium. The filtered water produced by a basic RO system is slightly acidic (typically pH 6.0–6.8) as a result.
An alkaline remineralisation filter solves this. After water passes through the RO membrane, it flows through a post-filter cartridge containing minerals that re-introduce calcium, magnesium and trace elements, raising the water's pH to 7.5–8.5 and improving taste. The result is water that has been comprehensively filtered and then remineralised to produce a clean, slightly alkaline drinking water.
Alkaline water filters install under the kitchen sink, just like a standard RO system, and connect to a dedicated filtered water tap on your benchtop. Jean-Paul installs alkaline systems across Sydney, call 0430 546 749 to book or get a quote.
What Are the Benefits of Alkaline Water?
It's important to present this factually. Research on alkaline water benefits is still emerging, and health claims should be treated with appropriate scepticism. What is supported by evidence:
- Improved taste: Most customers find alkaline remineralised water tastes noticeably better than standard RO filtered water. The added minerals reduce the flat, slightly sharp taste of pure RO water.
- Mineral content: Alkaline filters add back calcium and magnesium, the same minerals removed during RO filtration. These are beneficial minerals that the body uses.
- Some evidence for acid reflux: Some studies have suggested alkaline water may benefit people with acid reflux by neutralising pepsin. This is not conclusive evidence and should not be taken as medical advice.
- Comprehensive filtration: The underlying RO filtration removes fluoride (93–96%), chloramines, heavy metals, PFAS and microplastics, the same as a standard RO system.
Claims that alkaline water cures disease, prevents cancer or significantly improves athletic performance are not supported by robust clinical evidence. Jean-Paul recommends alkaline systems for the taste improvement and mineral content, the filtration benefits are the same as any RO system.
