What Is an Alkaline Water Filter?

An alkaline water filter is a reverse osmosis system with an additional remineralisation stage added after the RO membrane. Standard reverse osmosis removes up to 99% of dissolved contaminants from your tap water, but the process also strips naturally occurring beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium. The filtered water produced by a basic RO system is slightly acidic (typically pH 6.0–6.8) as a result.

An alkaline remineralisation filter solves this. After water passes through the RO membrane, it flows through a post-filter cartridge containing minerals that re-introduce calcium, magnesium and trace elements, raising the water's pH to 7.5–8.5 and improving taste. The result is water that has been comprehensively filtered and then remineralised to produce a clean, slightly alkaline drinking water.

Alkaline water filters install under the kitchen sink, just like a standard RO system, and connect to a dedicated filtered water tap on your benchtop. Jean-Paul installs alkaline systems across Sydney, call 0430 546 749 to book or get a quote.

What Are the Benefits of Alkaline Water?

It's important to present this factually. Research on alkaline water benefits is still emerging, and health claims should be treated with appropriate scepticism. What is supported by evidence:

  • Improved taste: Most customers find alkaline remineralised water tastes noticeably better than standard RO filtered water. The added minerals reduce the flat, slightly sharp taste of pure RO water.
  • Mineral content: Alkaline filters add back calcium and magnesium, the same minerals removed during RO filtration. These are beneficial minerals that the body uses.
  • Some evidence for acid reflux: Some studies have suggested alkaline water may benefit people with acid reflux by neutralising pepsin. This is not conclusive evidence and should not be taken as medical advice.
  • Comprehensive filtration: The underlying RO filtration removes fluoride (93–96%), chloramines, heavy metals, PFAS and microplastics, the same as a standard RO system.

Claims that alkaline water cures disease, prevents cancer or significantly improves athletic performance are not supported by robust clinical evidence. Jean-Paul recommends alkaline systems for the taste improvement and mineral content, the filtration benefits are the same as any RO system.

How Alkaline Remineralisation Works

When water passes through an RO membrane, the membrane's 0.0001-micron pores reject dissolved contaminants, including fluoride, heavy metals, PFAS and nitrates, but also strip naturally occurring minerals. The filtered permeate water contains virtually no dissolved solids and has a pH of approximately 6.0–6.8.

The alkaline remineralisation cartridge sits downstream of the RO membrane. Inside, a blend of natural minerals, typically calcium carbonate, magnesium and potassium, dissolves slightly into the filtered water as it passes through. This process, called remineralisation, adds back beneficial minerals and raises the pH to the 7.5–8.5 range.

The alkaline cartridge itself requires replacement annually as part of regular maintenance, Jean-Paul includes full cartridge replacement schedules and pricing at installation. The annual maintenance cost for an alkaline system is $300 to $465 per year through Filters For You Service Plans.

Installation Process

Installing an alkaline RO system follows the same process as a standard RO installation:

  • Jean-Paul arrives at your home at the agreed time
  • Connects the system to the cold water supply under your kitchen sink
  • Routes tubing to the drain for wastewater disposal
  • Installs the dedicated filtered water tap on your sink benchtop (hole drilling included)
  • Fills the pressurised storage tank and tests water quality with a TDS meter
  • Walks you through the system operation and cartridge replacement process

Installation typically takes 2–3 hours. Jean-Paul leaves your kitchen clean and tidy and provides a full system warranty. All FFY systems carry a lifetime workmanship warranty on the installation. See full pricing and compare against our full range at the reverse osmosis page.

FAQ

Alkaline Water Filter Questions Answered

Alkaline water filter systems start at $930 installed through Filters For You. The Pure Compact 3-stage alkaline RO is $930 supply and installed. The Pure Advanced 5-stage quick-change alkaline RO is $1,280 installed. The Pure Premium 7-stage with alkaline is $1,180 installed. All prices include supply and licensed plumbing installation.
Reverse osmosis filters water through a semi-permeable membrane, removing 99%+ of dissolved contaminants including fluoride and chloramines, but also strips natural minerals, producing slightly acidic water. An alkaline water filter is an RO system with an additional remineralisation stage that adds beneficial minerals back after filtration, raising the pH to 7.5–8.5 and improving taste.
Some studies suggest alkaline water may benefit people with acid reflux. The mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium restored by the alkaline stage, provides the same benefits as any mineral-rich water. Broader health claims for alkaline water lack robust clinical evidence. The comprehensive RO filtration component, however, significantly reduces exposure to fluoride, chloramines, heavy metals and PFAS.
FFY's alkaline systems deliver water with a pH of approximately 7.5–8.5. This is mildly alkaline, above the neutral pH of 7.0. The exact pH depends on the source water chemistry and the age of the alkaline cartridge. Jean-Paul tests pH after installation and demonstrates how to monitor water quality.
Yes. Connecting an under-sink water filter to the cold water supply line is a licensed plumbing connection under NSW regulations. Jean-Paul Barbar holds NSW Plumbing Licence #461511C. Unlicensed plumbing work can void your home insurance and may cause your warranty to be invalid.
For most Sydney households, the Pure Compact ($930) is an excellent entry point, compact design that fits smaller kitchens, full alkaline RO filtration and great taste. For larger families or those wanting easier cartridge replacement, the Pure Advanced ($1,280) with quick-change twist-off cartridges is Jean-Paul's recommendation. Both systems remove 93–96% of fluoride.
