Why Cartridge Replacement Matters

A water filter is only as good as its cartridges. Over time, every filter cartridge becomes saturated with the contaminants it has removed from your water. Once saturated, the cartridge loses effectiveness, and in some cases, can release contaminants back into your water. Regular replacement is not optional, it is how the system works.

The most common mistake Sydney homeowners make

Installing a water filter and then forgetting about it. A filter installed two years ago with no cartridge change is providing little to no filtration benefit. If you cannot remember the last time your filter was serviced, it is overdue.

Water tastes or smells different

If you notice chlorine taste or odour returning to your filtered water, your carbon cartridge is spent. Replace it promptly.

Reduced water pressure at the tap

A clogged sediment cartridge restricts water flow. Noticeably reduced pressure from your filter tap is a clear sign replacement is needed.

It has been more than 12 months

Even if nothing seems wrong, annual cartridge replacement is the standard. Saturation is not always visible or detectable by taste.

RO water production is slow

If your reverse osmosis tank is taking much longer to fill than usual, the pre-filters or membrane may need replacement.

System makes unusual sounds

Gurgling, hissing or unusual noises from your system can indicate pressure issues related to cartridge blockage or membrane degradation.

You have just moved into a property

If a water filter is installed in a property you are moving into, assume the cartridges need replacing. You have no way to know when they were last changed.

Cartridge Replacement Schedule

Every system has a different maintenance schedule. Here is Jean-Paul's standard recommendation for the most common systems in Sydney, based on average household usage.

System Cartridge / Stage Replacement Frequency Approx. Annual Cost
Pure Essential (Twin Stage) Sediment + Carbon Every 12 months $300/yr service
Pure Plus+ (5-Stage RO) Annual cartridges (carbon + alkaline) Every 12 months $380/yr service
Pure Plus+ / Premium Pre-filter cartridges (sediment + carbon) Every 6 months $220 service / $70 DIY
Pure Compact (Alkaline RO) All annual stages Every 12 months $350/yr service
Pure Advanced / Luxe (Quick-Change) Annual cartridges Every 12 months $465/yr service
Pure Advanced / Luxe Pre-filter cartridges (sediment + carbon) Every 6 months $260 service / $85 DIY
Pure Home (Whole House) Sediment + Carbon stages Every 12 months (varies by usage) $500/yr service
UV Lamp Systems UV Lamp Every 12 months Contact for pricing

DIY vs Professional Replacement

Some systems are designed for user-friendly cartridge replacement. Others require professional tools, technical knowledge or plumbing connections that should only be handled by a licensed plumber. Here is Jean-Paul's honest assessment.

When DIY replacement is suitable

  • Quick-change cartridge systems (twist-off design), these are explicitly designed for user replacement
  • Simple inline cartridges with standard housings and a filter wrench
  • If the manufacturer's manual confirms the cartridge can be user-replaced
  • Jean-Paul will always show you how at installation and advise whether your system is DIY-friendly

When a professional is recommended

  • Any replacement that requires isolating the water supply or disconnecting plumbing connections
  • RO membrane replacement (typically every 2 to 4 years)
  • Whole house systems, typically require tools and knowledge of the system's pressure ratings
  • Any system where you are not confident, a cartridge fitted incorrectly can leak or allow unfiltered water to bypass the cartridge
  • Systems under manufacturer warranty, incorrect DIY replacement may void the warranty

What's Included in a Service Visit

When Jean-Paul services your water filter, he does more than just swap cartridges. Every visit follows the same thorough process so you have complete confidence your system is performing correctly.

  • System inspection, check for leaks, pressure issues and component wear
  • All cartridges replaced with genuine or compatible OEM-quality cartridges
  • Water quality tested before and after, you receive confirmation your filter is working
  • System sanitised if required (particularly important for RO systems)
  • Pressure tank checked and re-pressurised if needed (RO systems)
  • System flushed and recommissioned after cartridge replacement
  • Maintenance schedule confirmed, you know exactly when the next service is due
  • Any concerns identified and reported honestly, no unnecessary work recommended

Common Questions About Cartridge Replacement

Most under-sink filter cartridges should be replaced annually. RO membrane cartridges last 2–3 years. Whole house filter cartridges vary by system and usage, typically 12 months for standard household use. Jean-Paul will give you an exact schedule at installation based on your specific system and usage, and will remind you when the next service is due.

Annual cartridge replacement starts from $300/yr for a twin-stage Pure Essential system (sediment and carbon cartridges). A 5-stage reverse osmosis system runs $380/yr for the annual cartridges. The pre-filter (sediment and carbon) is recommended every 6 months at $220 professional or $70 DIY, to protect the RO membrane. The RO membrane itself lasts 2 to 4 years. All pricing includes cartridge supply and professional replacement by a licensed plumber. Exact pricing is always provided before Jean-Paul arrives.

Some systems, particularly quick-change RO systems, are designed for user-friendly cartridge replacement and some homeowners do this themselves successfully. However, for systems involving pressure vessels, connections to plumbing or RO membrane replacement, a licensed plumber is recommended. Jean-Paul will advise at installation whether your system is suitable for DIY replacement and will show you exactly how if so.

An expired cartridge stops filtering effectively. In the best case, water quality simply declines back toward unfiltered levels. In worse cases, a clogged sediment cartridge can restrict flow or cause backpressure on the system, and a spent RO membrane may allow contaminants to pass through at elevated levels. Regular replacement protects both your water quality and your system's longevity. The investment in annual replacement is small compared to the cost of a system repair or replacement.
